Sent Oct 14, 2012 -- Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo:

Attached please find an open letter addressed to incoming Chinese President Xi Jinping to be signed by past recipients of the Nobel Prize. We are writing in the strong hope that you will agree to join us by adding your signature.

The letter urges the incoming Chinese leadership to follow outgoing Chinese President Hu's admission that 'a lot still needs to be done in China on human rights' with action by immediately and unconditionally releasing 2010 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Liu Xiaobo, and his wife, Liu Xia. The letter also notes with concern that Chinese authorities continue to hold Liu Xia under house arrest without undertaking any legal processwhatsoever.

We are confident that your participation will help send a clear message to the Chinese government that its continued detention of the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, in clear violation of his right to freedom of expression, will not be tolerated by the international community.

We would be very grateful if you might let me know of your willingness to sign on to this important initiative by November 26, 2012, by emailing your assent to roberts@neb.com. We plan to send the letter and make it public a short time later.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
